Inktober 2016 Part 4

The fourth week of Inktober brought more daily drawings to collect for the blog. See my previous posts this month for Week One, Week Two, and Week Three contributions. Also, don’t forget to checkout the Inktober Web site to learn more about the concept.

For Week Four, I continued with the 2.5 x 3.5 inch personal sketch card sized illustrations.

Inktober 2016 Week Four:

sk42-jack-o-lanternJack O’Lantern

sk43-doctor-strangeDoctor Strange

sk44-jack-skellingtonJack Skellington

sk47-michael-myersMichael Myers

This week is harder for me to pick a favorite, because I like how many of these turned out. I guess if I have to pick, I’d go with Jack Skellington. I quite like my Ghostface and Scarecrow, though… and Michael Myers to end the week turned out pretty good also.

Batman Day 2016!

So… last year I was taken by surprise with Batman Day. I didn’t know it was a thing! I whipped up a quick picture for Batman Day 2015 in the eleventh hour so that I didn’t let the day go by without recognition. This year, however, I was able to plan a bit and take the time to come up with something a bit more stylish.

This is at its core a fairly simple drawing, but I’m quite happy with the design. It does everything I wanted it to do… highlights and shadow, a little bat-signal shining on the situation, and a traditional grimacing Batman in profile. So… have a happy Batman Day and please let me know what you think of this!

Batman Bust Convention Sketch

Convention sketches are like a box of chocolates… you never know what you’re gonna get! 🙂 With my humble apologies to Forrest Gump, begins the tale of a convention sketch from last weekend at the Raleigh Comic Book Show.

Once I was settled in and had said my hellos to fellow guests and the show organizer, I decided to begin a convention sketch on a blank 7×10 comic backing board. Admittedly, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to draw when I began, but since I had drawn a Spider-Man last December I was at least not going to do that. So, pencil to paper and at some point I decided I wanted to draw Batman.

Had I decided to draw Batman sooner, it would have started out looking less like Orion from the New Gods! I realized I had a little bit of work to do to bring it back to being a Batman drawing and not Orion. Nothing against Orion, incidentally, and I probably should draw him too… but I was going for a more immediately recognizable character for this unsolicited sketch and I figured more people would recognize Batman.

Batman Convention Sketch

I think I managed to save it… but you can be the judge!  Oh, and in case you wonder… I found myself without proper flesh-coloring markers so I improvised with a few different colors and going for the patchwork illusion of skin tone through color overload! It just didn’t look right leaving his face white once I had colored everything else. So, my least favorite part of this one is the faux flesh tone result here, even though the illusion works from a distance… it just doesn’t hold up quite as well to up-close scrutiny.

Harley Quinn, to the Rescue?

I’ve been meaning to do a really good Harley Quinn drawing for a while. I’m admittedly partial to the more classic Bruce Timm look, from the Batman animated series… but I finally found a few good stills from the new Suicide Squad movie that I liked, depicting actress Margot Robbie in a good pose.

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn

I like the looking down the “barrel” of the baseball bat pose here, and the movie costume has a lot of nice details to capture. I admittedly burned out a bit and didn’t put all the tattoos she appears to have in the movie, nor did I put all the signatures on the bat, as most of that would be illegible at the size of my drawing anyway.

Being completely honest, I’m actually happiest with how the jacket looks. Her jacket and shorts kind of have a Two-Face design working for them (half one style, half another) which I enjoyed drawing. I wonder what the Joker has to say about that choice in design? 😉 I also think I’m continuing to get better at getting the shading to look as I see in my mind when I’m drawing people.

I haven’t seen the movie yet… maybe by the time it hits satellite I’ll get to catch it. In the meantime, please let me know what you think of this one. Batman vs Superman Movie Logo Revisited

As I mentioned when I posted my recreation of the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice movie logo the other day… I went back and made those cutouts around the “S” shield full cutouts so that the logo can be used on any background, and not just a black one as I had originally done.

Batman v Superman Logo RevisitedWith this updated version, on a white background, you can more clearly see how the “S” shield is formed within the bat symbol.
