Wacky Packages, Part Deux: The Wackiness Continues!
As prophesied, the madness continues! My Top Men Wacky Packages illustration last week was merely the tip of the iceberg… and you know what they say about icebergs? What you see on the surface barely covers it all, so lettuce continue with the second in my series of Topps Wacky Packages inspired parodies.
I haven’t eaten any Cheetos in a while, actually… not even off-brand ones… but I like them and love the visual of the packaging design. I also couldn’t resist the opportunity to make a little political jab with Creepos wall-building snacks (notice the hair on Chester Cheetah 🙂 ). Lest anyone think I’m just picking on the Republican Party, rest assured I have an idea for a Democratic Party parody as well but you’ll have to stay tuned for that!
As with all parodies in this series, I always first recreate as best I can an actual real package of the product. This is fun to do, and gives me an excellent baseline from which to produce future parodies in case I have other ideas for the same product to do another Wacky Packages version…
I don’t like to toot my own horn often, but I’m really pleased with how the shading work I did really gives the packaging a realistic crinkled look. Is it weird to be proud of drawing a bag of Cheetos? Please let me know what you think and continue to watch for more in this series coming soon! Wacky Packages!
For as long as I can remember, there have been Wacky Packages stickers! Topps started creating these wonderfully punny parodies a few years before I was born. Though there are some variations and spinoffs in the series, the traditional ones take some well-known brand name product and skewer it with a pun or pop-culture reference to make a hilarious fake product that looks a lot like the real thing.
I have a few dream projects that I’d like to work on in my creative future… for that day when I make it big! 🙂 One of those would be to work in some form or fashion on a set of Wacky Packages trading cards or stickers. Until that day I can only dream… or can I? No! I can do better than dream… I can make some of my own to showcase on the blog! Thus, I give you the first in a series of my own Wacky Packages inspired parody illustrations.
As I find myself eating a lot of Nissin Top Ramen lately, this Raiders of the Lost Ark mashup has been simmering for a while. I even did a little research and you might be interested to note that the weight on my parody packaging is an estimate of what the actual Ark of the Covenant might weigh based on biblical descriptions. I think this turned out pretty well illustration-wise, and I hope it’s as humorous on the page as it was in my brain!
For those curious… as is almost always the case for me and parodies, before I created my Wacky Package version, I had to render an actual ramen noodle package. Here’s what my Andy Warhol moment looked like before I funnied it up…
Please let me know what you think, and be on the lookout for more in this series as I get the time to work on them. Remember, if you’d like an original commission by me or would like to hire me as an Illustrator, please use the Contact page and let me know as much as you can about your request.
