For Whom the Bell Tower Was Drawn

This is an illustration of the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Memorial Bell Tower. It is located on campus in downtown Raleigh, NC. Click the link in the previous sentence if you want to read more about the history behind this tower.

NCSU Bell TowerI wish that I could have posted this on Memorial Day, but it took me longer to complete than I originally thought. I was still working on this yesterday into the evening. Please let me know what you think.

As to the question of “for whom the Bell Tower was drawn?” It was drawn by me, for me, and is now part of my blog. 🙂 My apologies to Ernest Hemingway. Remember, if you are interested in requesting my services as a Technical Illustrator, please use the Contact page and provide me with as much information as you can about your request.

  1. I like the slight angle change in perspective – I am assuming it’s square – it makes it subtle difference to the eye with one side sharper than the other

    1. Thanks… yeah, it is square with the caveat that the top is smaller than the bottom… so it’s square on any particular level, but angles inwards as you go up.

I picked this angle for a couple of reasons… there were lots of photos to choose from for reference… but this view had a couple of things that I liked. It is not exactly on the corner, which leads to what you noticed of the one side being slightly different. Exact-on-the-corner as a view just looked kind of boring to me… and the second thing, is its just slightly from the perspective of looking upwards rather than looking straight at the side or even the corner from a level view.

FYI, some things I didn’t draw that you’d see at the actual memorial… Those corner stones (you see three of them at the top of the stairs) actually have nighttime spotlights mounted on them that shine towards each corner of the memorial. I also didn’t draw the stone benches that are on the floor-level outside the memorial. For my purposes, they obscured the rest of the bell tower too much and didn’t really add anything to the visual I wanted.

  2. I think it’s great, it shows off a different dimension of yourself as an artist and illustrator. Clearly you are multi-talented. Keep doing all of what you want to do for you, it’s all great to me and I hope you feel great for you. Peace, Harlon

    1. Thank you! As it happens, a lot of my professional work has been on classified or unreleased projects that I end up being unable to use as part of my portfolio, so I finally decided to update my online portfolio with some new stuff that I don’t have to worry about whether or not its ok to post!
